It Wasn't Even That Close

Wow!  Well, it looks like my hunch was correct (and for once I made it public ahead of time!) - KSU pulled off the win against Texas tonight, and they did it in spectacular style.

It started with a 62-yard return on the opening kick-off.  Just seconds later, Daniel Thomas broke straight through a gaping hole in the line and scored for a quick 7-0 lead.  It was just the beginning.

I think that pretty much everything that needs to be said is this right here:
- interceptions thrown by Texas QB: 5
- pass attempts by KSU QB: 4

Texas' defense was slow and weak, and the Cats ran at will.  In fact, I think it was about halfway through the third quarter before the ball found itself in the hands of anyone but Klein and Thomas.  Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Most of the second half was really quite boring, as it was more or less option to the right, zone read to the left, run right up the gut, and repeat...or some (very) minor variation of that.  Still, I have to say that any victory over Texas is a sweet victory, and one that was such a drubbing has a cherry on top.  Speaking of which, this should tell you what kind of night it was - after one of KSU's touchdowns, Texas actually got some penetration on the PAT and blocked the kick.  The placekicker, Josh Cherry, picked up the ball and scurried to the corner of the end zone, converting a 2-point score after the blocked kick.

It was that kind of night.  The final score was 39-14, but the game really didn't seem that close.

It would be hard to engineer a better finish on Senior Night, and the Cats became bowl eligible with the win for the first time since 2006.  As I mentioned before, the remaining schedule is actually pretty good for us now.  We're pretty likely to lose against Missouri, but we should win against both Colorado and North Texas, leaving us with an 8-4 record and a shoe-in for a mid-level bowl game.  If Missouri is off their rocker because of their loss tonight, I suppose there's an outside chance of pulling off that one, too, but I'm not holding my breath.  Given that this is the second year of Snyder Era Part 2, I'd say 8-4 is perfectly on track.  With Nebraska leaving and Texas and OU weaker than usual, it's a great time to be on the upswing.

Other games of note...

I was really bummed about Iowa State's effort against Nebraska, and was disappointed that they couldn't quite pull off the win.  I'm really hoping for the Big 12 Championship to be Baylor vs. anyone-but-Nebraska.  With Mizzou losing, I'm not sure anyone else in the North can pull it off.  Shoot.  But, it was fun to watch OU pick up another loss, and KU actually made a miracle comeback to win against Colorado.  There's a very real possibility that CU will finish its tenure in the Big 12 with a big fat goose egg of a league record.  Sweet.

Now, if the Chiefs can take care of business against the Raiders tomorrow, it'll be a clean sweep weekend!  We shall see!
